Geography - What is the weather like in the UK?

We started this unit by looking at a world map and identifying the 7 continents. We used a song to help us remember their names as well as their size. We learnt that we live in Europe. We then used an atlas to look at a map of the United Kingdom. We learnt that we live in England and our capital is called London. Again, we learnt a song to help us remember the 4 countries and their capitals.

From this, we briefly recapped the 4 seasons and the clothes you would wear for each season. We have already covered seasons in detail in our science unit earlier in the year.

We then used BBC weather to create a daily weather diary. We monitored the weather, the wind speed and the temperature over 5 days.

We made our own wind streamers and tested them outside. The children loved this activity!

We used compasses on the playground to identify where items were situated.

Then, we covered rainfall and using rain gauges, measured the amount of rainfall over 5 days, recording our results on a chart.

We ended the unit by using BBC weather to see if the weather was the same in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales at the same point in time. We monitored this over 3 days.
