English

I like how we get to put ourselves in the shoes of the characters in class discussions, and how we 'read' picture books and look at the closer details.

We believe that reading and writing are the gateways to lifelong learning – and that every child deserves to see themselves as a confident, curious, and capable communicator.

From Reception to Year 6, our English curriculum is built around high-quality, engaging books that inspire rich discussion, spark imagination, and deepen understanding. We follow the CLPE Power of Reading approach, using carefully chosen texts as a springboard for developing comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. Speaking and listening are at the heart of this approach – through drama, storytelling, role-play and structured discussion, children explore ideas, build confidence in expressing themselves, and learn to articulate their thinking. These rich experiences underpin both reading and writing, giving every child a voice.

Grammar is taught explicitly and progressively. We begin each academic year with the Grammarsaurus PVPG sequence to secure core knowledge, before following a structured programme from Classroom Secrets to ensure consistency and progression across the school.

We nurture a love of reading through dedicated silent reading time every day, well-stocked class libraries, and a  take-home reader collection that ensures pupils have regular access to books that match both their reading level and interests.

Our English Ambassadors play a key role in promoting a love of language across the school. They lead assemblies by reading aloud texts linked to our PSHE themes and deliver a fresh selection of non-fiction books to classes every fortnight – helping to broaden horizons and deepen curiosity.

English is more than a subject – it’s a voice, a vision, and a vital part of who we are.
